Six Common Brake Problems in Motor Vehicles

No matter how good of a driver you think you are, brake problems can almost always surface at any time of the year. This can put you at serious risk when behind the wheel. Keep in mind the six most common brake problems found in motor vehicles.

1. ABS brake warning light comes on. This is an indicator that the vehicle's onboard computer has shut off the ABS braking system. If this happens it means a problem was traced. Your brakes will allow you to stop in this event but you will have no more protection against a break or wheel lock-up. This is more of a minor problem which will enable you to get safely to the auto repair shop.

2. The brake warning light goes on. This can be a simple indicator that your emergency brakes are still engaged. If you see that it is still on, release it. On a more serious note, this could also indicate that your brake lubrication and cooling fluids could be dangerously low. Have your fluids checked and re-filled immediately. If your light does not turn off after this, it could mean that there is a leak in one specific part of your braking system. In this event, contact your auto service provider right away.

3. When the brakes lock. This could happen when there is a damaged brake pad, shoe, or perhaps both. It could also be in relation to the disc calipers or wheel bearing functions. In this case you want to get your car towed right away and call for roadside assistance.

A more complex problem that could cause this is when there is a failed or pinched brake fluid line. Also it could be a failure of the power brake boosting mechanism or both. 5. The brake pedal feels "mushy" and goes beyond its normal levels. A spongy brake pedal can be the result of too much air in the brake fluid line. A more serious problem could be a break fluid leak or damage to your master brake cylinder. This problem calls for a tow truck as well.

6. The brakes make a squealing noise. This could have many sources. Dirt could be trapped in the wheel. It could also be the result of worn out brake linings, warped or cracked brake shoes, or brake adjusters that are not out of alignment. If you are experiencing a continuous brake squeal it is either because you have wheel bearing damage or your brake pads have far surpassed their replacement point. To prevent permanent brake rotor damage, have this looked at right away.

What Are Car Brake Calipers?

The brakes are integral to a car. In fact they serve a very essential purpose for the car. Every part of the brake system is important and the calipers are one of the most important devices in the system. They are the ones who apply the necessary force to slow down the car or to completely stop it. They should always be in good condition and repairing worn out ones are essential for good driving. You would not want to drive with inefficient calipers.

The calipers serve a very big role in the brake system. These small, box-like, rectangular devices are contained in the wheel housing. They are set near the rotary metal disk that is connected to the wheels. They function through a hydraulic system and the brake fluids transfer the pressure needed to move the calipers. In a standard brake caliper, there are metal pipes that are found on the interior and exterior of the rotor. The plates have brake pads and these make the physical contact for the calipers and rotors. When the pedal is pressed, the brake fluid goes through a master cylinder and it is linked on the piston that houses the calipers. The piston presses the pads and the pads are forced to the rotors. The result is the car will start slowing down.

These disk brakes became commercial in the automobile industry around the 1950s, they are great improvements over the drum brakes which could easily overheat and deteriorate in performance in a very short period of time. Almost all cars use the disc brakes but some use the drum brakes on the rear axle.

The floating calipers utilize hydraulic piston along the rotor inboard side. These move in and out when the pedal is pressed. The fixed calipers have pistons that are set on both the sides of the rotor and the pressure is applied directly from the 2 sides making the operation much smoother.

The pads usually wear down because of the constant friction and so it is essential to check the pads whenever they are starting to make noise. The brake system should always be checked for wear and tear all the time for safe driving.

My RC Car Does Not Move

On a RC car that has a 2 speed gear box, the larger gear wheel will have a one way bearing in the middle which assists the gearbox and spins in one direction by sitting on the gearbox but will not spin in the opposite direction.

If the air or area is cold and or dirty then you may find that the one way bearing could fail due to the great becoming cold or dirty so looses its liquidity meaning the bearing to slip. If this is the case then attempt to warm up the car and gearbox for 5 to 10 minutes by means of a small heater, hairdryer and you should find the problem goes away.

How To Replace Brake Pads

If the problem reoccurs then the first gear wheel will need to be removed and wd40 or similar applied to the bearing and shaft. Using the wd40 make sure the shaft and the centre of the one way bearing remove all grease. You can then apply fresh grease but making sure it is one way bearing grease. You will find that remove the RC cars gearbox is pretty easy but will take a little while.

To remote the gearbox, find the 4 screws underneath the chassis and remote them and then remote the screws which hold the top chassis on. The servo cable will be attached so you will not be able to remove the upper chassis but it can be moved out the way enough. You can then access the gearbox and put back in ok with enough clearway. To put the drive shafts back into the drive cups can be tedious but find some tools such as pliers to keep them out the way. Once you have cleaned the bearing, if it slips still then you may need to replace it.

You will A grub screw could of come loose which is normally connected to the drive cups, this allows the drive cup to go round so stopping the drift shaft from turning and moving the car.

A part or parts inside the differentials could of snapped or not tight enough. This area means you will need to open up the differentials and give a visual inspection to see if anything looks wrong. Have a look at the cogs, maybe they are slipping or worn out. If they are worn then they should be replaced instead of trying to fix them up and move them together more. How To Replace Brake Pads

1. Brake Fluid: The system's Lifeblood

The key here is to have the right levels of brake fluids in the reservoir. It's a lot more easier these days to check the fluid levels, as most of the brake fluid reservoirs are see through and have markings on them to show the levels.

To check the fluid level, lift open the hood and locate the reservoir. You'd find it at the back of the engine bay and in front of the driver's side. It's positioned high up for easy access.

Once you're there, check the markings, wipe the dust off the reservoir if you can't see clearly. If it needs replacement then here's how you should go about topping it up.

A. Clean any grime or dust from around the reservoir cap before opening it.
B. Pour in the fluid slowly, allowing it time to settle.
C. Close the cap and you're done.

However, it's a good idea to check the level again after a day just to make sure that there isn't a void after the air bubbles have escaped. Also don't take point "A" lightly, as any impurity that falls into the reservoir could harm the system.

2. Brake Pads: The systems cutting edge

While in some automobiles you'd need to remove the wheels, in others you can carry out the inspection without it. However the important thing is to get a clear view of the pads.

To make an assessment, follow surface of the disc towards the top, and you should see that the outer pad is touches the disc, of the disc braking system Over time the pads do wear, but if they've worn to the breadth of two pennies stacked atop each other, it's high time you replaced them.

3. Brake Disc: Too critical to lose

To run an assessment of the brake disk you'd need to take a look just like you did with the pads. Run your eyes from the center to the outside edges of the disc and it should appear to be shiny. Minor lines and scratches are hardly a thing to bat an eyelid, but any rough areas or deeper grooves should certainly raise a big red flag. Replace them ASAP, and in pairs.

Tools Required

How To Replace Brake Pads

-Axle Stands (EUR20 approx per set of two)
-Socket Set (EUR50 for an adequate set)
-Wheelbrace (Should be included in your cars repair kit though investing in a Metal cross would be worthwhile).
-Fresh brake Pads EUR30+
-Hydraulic Jack (you will need a proper main jack in conjunction with some axle stands

Prior Preparation:
-Always park your car in a suitable area with adequate workspace when attempting a brake pad change. Secure the Handbrake and disengage gear to neutral, prior to jacking the car up.

-Now block the cars rear wheels so it won't roll once you jack it up onto the axle stands!

-Spread your tools out and select a wheelbrace, moving to one of the front wheels. The wheelbrace is a metal bar with a socket on the end for removing wheelnuts. It will usually come with your cars toolkit, however if you don't have one, a socket set purchase will be necessary!

-Its always a good idea before jacking the car up, to loosen the wheel nuts first, whilst the car still rests on the ground. Usually the nuts will be tight, so trying to loosen them whilst the wheel is in the air will create some problems, (i.e. the wheel will keep spinning around!). Grab your wheel brace and proceed to loosen the nuts, however don't take them off fully, loosen them just enough until they can later be removed by hand.

-Jack the car up in a suitable, supported area of the cars chassis. Recommended areas to jack the car up will be detailed in your cars, owners manual. Make sure you use the chassis as a jack point for trying to lift the car! Never work on a car which has been elevated by only a hydraulic jack. Place both axle stands under each end of the main front axle, lowering the car onto the stands

Removing old brakes:
-Now that the car is supported firmly on the stands, you can progress to remove the wheel! The already loosened wheel nuts can be removed by hand, and when taken off make sure to place them in a cardboard box or in a drawer so you can find them at a later stage!
-Remove the wheel slowly and place it under the cars door nearest the wheel you are working on. You can never be careful enough when working on a suspended car, in addition to the axle stands and jack you are using, its always a good idea to have that wheel there, in case a faulty axle stand, broken jack etc lets you down and could result in the car falling! Taking these small yet extremely relevant safety steps are extremely necessary.
-Now that you have removed the wheel entirely, a brake system assembly should be visible before you.(or if not your in trouble!). The braking system consists of a brake caliper, two brake pads and a brake disc.
-As the diagram illustrates, the brake caliper is attached to the brake disc. Inside the caliper are two brake pads which need changing. When you press the brake lever in your car, the caliper will squeeze the brake pads onto the brake disc, in turn slowing them down, and effectively then the wheel. Imagine a CD spinning around, where a hand then from either side clamps onto it slowly, that has the same principle as the braking system.
-There will be bolts which fix the caliper in place and prevent movement. Remove these bolts (spanner size requirements will vary on different cars, investing in a socket set is again advised!) and take the caliper away from the brake disc. You should now have the brake pads within vision through the caliper.

-Examine the caliper closely. On different cars, brake pads will be held in by contrasting methods. Clip pins usually fix the pad into place, so when you remove these pins the pad will be released and can then be removed. Follow this procedure and remove the old pads. While you are examining the brake pads, glance over the brake disc also, if it has any grooves or chips in it, it will need replacing.
Replacing with new pads:
-Now that you have removed the old brake pads and are ready to replace with new pads, firstly check you have bought the correct size and model! Compare the new with the old, and once satisfied progress to place the new pads into the brake caliper, and make sure they are put in the right way!!

-In putting in new pads, you will have to push the caliper piston back in, in order to fit the new pads in. The piston is usually a round face which pushes the brake pads in when the brake lever is pressed by a cars driver. When you would have earlier took the pads out, the piston will have opened out. This can be slightly tricky, so try pushing it back in with the heel of your hand firstly. If that doesn't work you can try an flathead screw-driver to gently prise the piston down and back into original position.
-Repeat the above procedure, though in opposite motion. Ensure that the piston is back in place, fit the new pads and put the clips back on which hold them in place! Remount the caliper back on to the brake disc. When this has been completed check around the caliper and bolts to ensure everything has been completed successfully.
-Find your wheel nuts which earlier where placed in a box, and place the wheel back on. When lined correctly, place the wheel nuts on, only by hand. Remove the axle stands and release the Jack slowly until the car rests on the ground. Grab your wheel brace and tighten the wheel nuts. Hey Presto, you have a brake pad change, but wait, theres the other front wheel! Repeat the procedure on the other wheel.

When you have completely finished both wheels, before you go driving make sure to pump your brake lever inside the car or you will have no brakes! Press the brake lever up and down, this will force hydraulic oil back into the braking system, which will push your

What You Don't Know About Brake Dust on Your Rims Can Cost You a Bundle

Fancy chrome and alloy automobile rims have become more and more popular among car owners. In particular, chrome rims have proliferated in recent years on new and used vehicles to improve appearance.

But that annoying brake dust that builds up and blackens the rims is ever present and costly and time consuming to remove. As a result, many auto owners just ignore the brake dust, which is a big mistake.

How To Replace Brake Pads

With the reduction of asbestos in brake pad composition, new materials were developed to replace asbestos. These new materials are the cause of the build up of black grime on your rims as they are sticky and adhere to your rim. To add insult to injury the metallic ingredients in the pad build up an electrostatic charge that is opposite to your rims and creates an electrical bond between the brake dust and your rims.

However, they also know that the superlative claims of the manufacturer about how easy and complete the process is often falls short in reality and the consumer still has to get out the brush and bucket of another cleaner to get the job completely done. Some of these products also boast that they leave a shine so the extra step of having to polish your rims is not needed.

2. Spray on and wipe off -

A new development in brake dust cleaners are spray on a wipe off cleaners. These cleaners are convenient in that the consumer does not need water to get the job done. Some provide triple action in that they clean, shine and retard brake dust buildup. These products are the product of choice when a water hose is not available, such as for city dwellers, people traveling, truck drivers, and when it is just too much trouble to get the car in the driveway, get the hose out and then clean up the mess. Spray on and wipe off products also allows you to just pull the car into the garage when it is too hot or too cold outside as there is no watery or chemical run off.

3. Wipes -

A new development on the market are wipes which claim to clean shine and protect, but the jury is still out on the performance of this new product. Given the nature of brake dust one can imagine how many wipes will be needed you only have two sides of a wipe to use before it is full contaminated with brake dust and a new one is needed to ensure that you are not just leaving some brake dust on your rims. An advantage with wipes is that you do not need water to get the job done which has the same benefits of spray on and wipe off products.

4. Brush on and hose off -

Some spray on and wipe off products can also be used as a brush on and hose off product by adding some of the solution to a bucket of water. Using the product this way helps those who have a problem bending down and would rather just use a big auto cleaning brush on a pole and the solution to clean their rims.

In choosing a brake dust cleaning product, consider the following:

1. Does the product have the potential of damaging your rims if left on too long, usually no longer than 20 to 30 seconds?

2. Will the product damage any brake parts or paint if it comes into contact with such parts?

3. Will the product cause physical harm to skin, eyes, lungs or if ingested?

4. Does the product clean, shine and protect?

5. Is the product convenient under all circumstances?

6. Is the product environmentally friendly?

7. Last but not least does it live up to its superlative claims?

In summary, it is important to protect your investment in your rims and your vehicle's resale value. Remember to keep your rims clean and don't ignore that brake dust, it will cost you eventually if you do.
